NBC University Theater: "Lord Jim" 10/03/48
A production of a Joseph Conrad story. Norman Gilliland notes that teachers were fond of it, at least through the 1960s. Must have been knocked out of the regular curriculum by the time I was in high school in the 1980s, because I've not heard of it.

Lord Jim is a sailor. Had a harrowing experience on a ship: a ship full of 800 pilgrims (with 7 lifeboats) that he thought was about sink, so he jumped onto a lifeboat. They were all ok, but Jim is tortured.

Fortunately he's on an island and the pretty young woman there is really nice to him (oh, come on, we all know they'll get married). He can't get over what happened on the sea, but he is a good shot, which helps him win everyone over.

So, he does settle in, and tames the natives, and sets up nicely with the woman.... Looks like a crisis is coming up that will prove Lord Jim.... Oh: so he gets betrayed by some whiny guy, someone gets kills, and all those islanders who named him "Lord Jim" immediately turn on him, and kill him. I guess I was expecting the fictional conceit of the noble savage. Instead, they're kind of jerky just to give up on the guy because he made a decision that got one of them killed. He didn't mean to do it.
Gangbusters: "The Case of the Hue and Cry"
Well, they had somebody confess, but he was a crazy person, so they're back on the case.

And the previous owner of the gun had sold it to Steve Pelly (fortunately, he got his name). Luckily, the previous owner had shot off the gun at his brother's shed (so they can do ballistics). I'm just pissed that the previous owner of the gun was such a stupid shit to shoot bullets at a shed. "Wtf, dude?" I thought, "Shoot at a tree or something - you're getting bullet holes in a perfectly nice shed wall!"

Turns out that the person who did the murder was Steve Pelly, so he was prosecuted.
Philip Marlowe"The Black Halo" 01/15/49
Aww - Julia Perry's boss has called in Philip Marlowe because he's her boss and it seems like he really does care about the girl.

"She wore a red jersey dress that looked like it had been sprayed on."

... Well, I was thinking that Julia was killed by someone (who had been seen running away from the murder scene in Julia's jacket), who later wrote a suicide note "from" Julia.... Ah! I get it - Julia wasn't killed by someone; Julia killed someone (2 people), embezzled from her company (and her boss who liked her), then had to kill her old friend from Kansas & make it seem like it was her (Julia) instead of the friend. And it all gets messed up because of a pack of matches.

Hmmm... you could fuse this with another classic, and have Lord Jim Of The Flies. :)

I think it would be possible.

"She wore a red jersey dress that looked like it had been sprayed on."

That statement is so dated. Nowadays we have the technology to enable Lady Gaga to wear a sprayed-on dress.

sprayed on

Dated, and so Philip Marlowe.

There is that body make-up movement that makes the body look like something else. The most famous is the one with Demi Moore:
