Most of Wisconsin is hills or plains. Southwestern Wisconsin is the Driftless Area with eroding sandstone cliffs among the farmland. But in central Wisconsin there is the Baraboo range, with a couple of oddities. It's made of quartzite, a very hard metamorphic version of sandstone, and it's very old. The rock was formed about 1.5 billion years ago, and has hung around ever since. It's now visible as cliffs around Devil's Lake.

But on the south side of the southern limb of the range is a place called Parfrey's Glen. It's a valley with a stream, and at one point that valley is very narrow and deep - a canyon, I'd say.

On our trip last week, my shoes started making that farting noise. Of course I only had the one pair along. I think it was only the one, but by Sunday they were both doing it. I had forgotten, and noticed it when walking on the street in Chicago. It seems to get louder over time while I'm wearing them, like maybe it's the moisture build-up that makes the noise worse.

I had been happy with these shoes up until now. Seems like they're still in good shape otherwise. They're only fourteen months old. Shoes usually last me two years or more. Now I have to go out looking for new shoes.
