Lanza's Mom assembled the combat arsenal out of paranoia coming from the media and the Right. Since the media is the ONLY beneficiary of this tragedy, I doubt there will be any serious attempt by the media to call for the assault weapons ban to be reinstated (see BradyCampaign.org) or to uncover the complicity of the media in unintentionally glamorizing the slaughter.
I hadn't heard about Lanza's mother's reasoning for getting those weapons.
The only thing I can add to that comes from my oldest sister - she's a videographer for NBC-San Francisco. She talked about how being the person who goes to the door to talk to the victims/victim's families is that absolute worst part of the job &, if they can, they'll lie to their supervisors on whether they knocked on the door. At least it shows humanity (and she knows that the press comes off as scum sucking bottom feeders, but that they have do it for their jobs).
I ran across another article from teh Daily Mail (UK) that included Kent State (4 May 1970) as one of the top ten school massacres. That was an eye opener...

Some good will come out of this. We may finally get the assault weapons act reinstated, Schools may get better security, and Parents will think twice before teaching their autistic kids to shoot automatic weapons.
