Steven Tepper, a sociologist and associate director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University, has written a book entitled, Not Here, Not Now, Not That! Protest Over Art and Culture in America which is the first thing I've ever run across that seems to discuss why people protest certain artistic expressions (from Huckleberry Finn, Angels in America, et al.) from a sociologist's perspective.
He looked at over 800 protests in the late 1990s and the conclusion that he reached in the book was that these protests seemed to have occurred because of changing social standards in the given towns and cities. Usually, he intimated in the interview, following large influxes of immigration that left people wondering, "who are we?"
Interesting way to look at it. Better than "they're not educated," or just, "they're jerky."
