The Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh) & the Milwaukee Museum of Art had a Super Bowl bet. We get PA's Renoir, or they get our Caillebotte.

Frankly, they would have gotten the better deal. I don't know much about Caillebotte, but it looks like the painting that was offered (for loan), an 1877 painting entitled, "Boating on the Yerres", was done in the midst of the height of Impressionism (Caillebotte was known as an Impressionist).

The Renoir is Bathers with Crab (c. 1890-1899). After the Impressionist movement had moved on. And, I'm not a Renoir expert, but my feeling is that he stopped growing as an artist later in his career. Although the painting has some nice brush strokes. So, it'll be in Milwaukee for 6 months or so.

Cool. I think it was a smart move on the part of the 2 museums. What other way to get people talking about art around the time of the Super Bowl?
