I started Broken Music last night, Sting's memoir. mda, bless his heart, bought this and the CD for me for x-mas. What he didn't know was that I'd had no interest in either. I have listened to the CD and decided to start the memoir. Sting's not terrible, but I'm not completely blown away. He's not Sarah Vowell or David Sedaris. He's not one of those writers that makes you shake your head with a mixture of admiration and envy.

I also have the feeling that the book is a lot shorter than it looks, b/c I read it for about 45 minutes and I think I'm up to p. 30 or something. He's telling stories from his childhood and about his family, all interspersed w/some freaky Brazilian hallucinogenic/peyote-like plant that he and his wife took a few days after his father died.

I hadn't realized that both of his parents died in the same year.

Actually, inspired by [livejournal.com profile] lilly26, I began listening to some of my older Sting stuff. I have Nothing like the sun and The Soul Cages on a cassette tape, which is good b/c I have a tape player in my car. I forgot how much I like The Soul Cages. It's really beautifully poetic at times. It's difficult to listen to that or Nothing like the sun w/out thinking about Sting's parents, though. He supposedly wrote "sun" about his mother's death, and "soul cages" about his father's death. There is a musical theme consistent to both recordings, but I think the metaphors are more consistent through "soul cages." Not that I care either way whether a musicians recordings have consistent themes, it's just an observation. I do have to relate, though, that as I'm listening to "soul cages" specifically, and Sting's talking about his childhood in this book, he's already used imagery in the book that come from the songs. I suppose that's to be expected.

Oh, and of course, when you say "Sting" now, Tantric sex immediately comes to mind, and that just makes me feel inadequate.
