Actually, I'm thinking he's been around for awhile, but he's new to us. His name is C. Willi Myles. We heard him on the Big Top Chautauqua* last night. mda & I were listening to him and started to laugh to the point that when he finished his show, and the host of Big Top said his name again, we went looking for him. Found his website (it's full of flash, sorry), then ordered a cd.

There is a place on his website where you can see some performances (they're in the MB range to download, so there's no luck if you hvae a slow connection). The crazy thing is that he's African American, grew up in Alabama, went to college in Minneapolis and has lived there ever since. So you've got a person's perspective--a bit of East Coast perspective--of midwestern culture (and weather) that is knowledgeable but also able to really give us shit (I recommend the "ice fishing" segment to explain how he's able to do that). And, yeah, he's African American; in fact, he grew up in the projects. So that perspective is definitely a tweak on what I'm used to in a v. white midwest (at least my town).

And it's just so nice to have someone funny who can talk about the Midwest w/out making fun of us (and who's NOT Garrison Keillor).

* "The Carnegie Hall of Tent Shows" - it's a "tent show" (literally takes place under a huge tent) that takes place during the summer in northern Wisconsin. They have mostly musicians, but sometimes comics; one hour of the shows are played on our local public radio station on Saturday nights. Most of the time, we play them in the background, and every once in awhile a good thing comes up.
