Opening weekend
Nov. 19th, 2007 08:15 amI like Jay's observations. I can just hear that 14 yo.
SHIOCTON, Wis. -- A careless hunter almost caused a tragedy on Saturday morning.Unfortunately, another victim of a stray bullet didn't fair as well: an 18 yo was shot to death by his grandfather who mistook him for a deer. Man, that just sucks really, really badly.
A wayward bullet from a deer hunter's gun sliced through the windshield of a parked car and shattered the rear window, nearly missing the head of a 14-year-old boy sitting in the front seat.
Jay Blink, of Oshkosh, said there was glass everywhere.
He said that if he'd been leaning 12 inches over, he probably wouldn't be here.
Blink said he scrambled out of the car in time to see a buck head into the woods across the road. But he didn't see any sign of the hunter who might have fired the shot.
Warden Mike Young of the state Department of Natural Resources emphasized that hunters have to be sure of their targets and should never shoot toward roads.
Jay said he's never taken a hunter's safety course, but even he knows that.
He suggested the unknown shooter take the safety course again.
