Independence Day
Jul. 4th, 2007 10:31 pmI read the Declaration of Independence. It's quite nice. Apparently, there are no esoteric maps on the back of it that can be uncovered by lemon juice (a la the movie National Treasure). They tell you that, while providing the link to the text of the Declaration.
That 18th Century writing is so purty. Aside from "We hold these truths to be self-evident...." there's a whole list of grievances against the King. Apparently, there was some burning along the coasts. IN fact, "He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people."
whoa. Dudes. He also "transport[ed] us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:" "suspend[ed] our own Legislatures, and declar[ed] themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever." And many other things.
I have two favs among the document, aside from "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." These are:
"A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people."
And
"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."
Sacred Honor! That always impresses me.
