Once again, I am gritting my teeth and listening to "Simply Folk" on WPR. I try, because I know "good" people listen to folk music. But, man--it's like listening to opera. Something I know I should do. But as much as I try, I really can't stand it. It's the warbling. In both cases, as it turns out.

Reminds me of listening to some live folk music at the GS in town. Afterward, MD said, "I saw you, and you had this look on your face like, 'Why am I here?'" (although I do like a good John Pryne song--in fact, all my John Pryne experiences have been w/local singers). I told MD that, yes, I was bemused by my station. While this band was warbling, I was thinking, "I saw The Cure. I saw The Dead Milkmen. I saw The Cult. How did I come to this?"

"Simply Folk" did have an anti-"Surge" song, song in warbly tones by some guy w/a geetar. But, you know? He just took some 40-year old song and updated it. Thanks, war protestors!

But, ah yes, "Simply Folk" is ending, so I'll get to listen to Old Time Radio Drama. And that, I don't really mind. Although the old Westerns aren't really my thing.

How did I come to this?"

Totally--it's the warbling.

I won't listen to anything I don't like, no matter how many "good" people listen. Why endure something that doesn't bring you joy? Life is too short for that.

My music isn't to everyone's taste, either, no matter how "good" others perceive me to be; I can live with that.

Oh, yeah, but the 5-8 pm schedule on public radio gives me the choice of "SImply Folk" or... "Simply Folk," or turning it off. Which I usually do, but every once in awhile, I give it a chance.

Now, as for opera, I still feel like I should like it, and feel bad that I don't, but I definitely don't seek it out.

Generally, I only like folk when it's funny. Of course, that's how I feel about most things.

Also, good folk needs a banjo. But again...

True, that. Most of the time I like local live folk but it's hard for me to get into the recorded stuff.

That wasn't just "some guy". That was Tom Paxton.

I saw the Cult, too. It wasn't that great. And I LOVE the Cult....

I was appreciating the song, but then to find out he just rewrote something 40 years old instead of just coming up w/a new one? That just annoyed me.

The Cult were not that great either, but it's the thought. Now The Dead Milkmen were a lot of fun. Maybe b/c there were only like 8 people in the audience.

i very much dislike simply folk. every once in a while there is one decent song but not worth listening to the rest of the program. And i consider myself a folk music fan - just depends on the folk musician... (ie, greg brown, woody guthrie, hem, sera cahoone....)

I like Greg Brown and Woody. I'm ignorant about the other two. Saw Tom Paxton live way back in Madison. There's a YouTube B&W TV clip of him circa 1964 with Pet Seeger. Paxton looked like a stoned Moonie, but sounded OK. Musta been nervous as hell. Like I said below, Simply Folk has its extremes, especially when they play all requests...

One of my faves from theold school is U. Utah Phillips.

That's my problem with it. Hence, being pissy about warbling.

I HATE folk, but enjoy a lot of opera. I think it's the time we grew up--folk music in the 70s sucked. Every time C tries to put on a Peter, Paul and Mary or a James Taylor album I fall to the ground, writhing, eyes rolling back in my head and cursing like a possessed catholic schoolgirl.

I do have a place in my heart for Peter, Paul & Mary, b/c it reminds me of a certain kind of summer's day in our kitchen when I was little. Hmmm--but I don't think I would want to listen to them at all. And I think I'd run from "Puff, the Magic Dragon," b/c that's just a disturbo song.

About the closest I get to folk is Simon & Garfunkle.

You just want to hear "punk folk." Well, it ain't gonna happen; leastwise not at the SGGS...

Simply folk has good and bad. Request night ranges from very good and rare to very trite and irritating.

I think I'm just not the right audience. I do try to listen to "Simply folk" once about every 6 weeks, but nope, w/in 15 minutes, I want to scream.
