Wow. What time is it? Ok, I've been up since, uh, 5. Got woken up by mda b/c of his tonsils. You should have seen him. He had this no-jaw thing going on, b/c of all the swollen glands and lymph nodes, and he could barely talk (really, he didn't want to, b/c it hurt too much). We went to the ER at Sauk Prairie hospital. They checked his blood--no mono that they could find (thank god), his tonsils are really swollen, they hydrated him, gave him antibiotics & a CAT-scan to check for abscesses on his tonsils (ewwww)--couldn't find any. But they decided to take him to UW for observation and to have him see an ear, throat & nose specialist. Fuck, I was talking to one of hte nurses who was talking surgery (abscess), tho the doc said he didn't think so, b/c his tonsils are all just lumpy.

jesus. thank god he's got insurance.

So, yes, bacteria can kill (or is it a virus?).

So I just got home, ate, made myself some coffee, fed the cats, turned off the lights we left on at 5. Fortunately, I called both my work place & his work place already, so there's no freakout going on at either place (well, except that I used the word "hospital", which is v. sweet).

And, yeah, freaks me out - if he went in for surgery, I could only find out if he told me, or I called his mom and asked her to call the hospital and asked her to call me w/the information. I'm going to have to check on those domestic partnership rights again. Last time I tried, it froze my computer up--it doesn't seem to like adobe acrobat much. Well, or we could jsut get married, but that's just a pipe dream.

How stressful! I hope he recovers without major intervention.

(...and meantime I thank my stars for Canada's progressive Common-law marital rights. I've invested 10 years in this man, have a child with him, and this is as married as we're going to get, thanks.)

the doctor felt that there wouldn't be a need for things. I think it's jsut a case of load the guy up w/drugs and let him rest. Damn hospitals. If we'd gone to the doctor's office in town, they would have given him some antibiotics and maybe pain killers, told him to load up on rest & liquids, and sent him home. At least they tested him for mono, which could really knock you out (and, hey, I'd kick his ass--everyone knows you can only get mono from kissing!).

Like I said, I've got to take a look at those partnership rights. My friend from the east coast, SB, has a whole load of documents he & his partner bring to France whenever they go (they're French teachers) so in case anything happens, they can get into the hospital.

Oh, but I can still kick his ass, right? Pseudo-spousal privelage!

I'm hoping he recovers ok. Just let him rest through the weekend.

he can put your name on the form as primary contact,. and it makes you the same as family,.. i only had to threaten to relieve one admidistrative cunt of her head when she told my best friend "Family Only" in her haughty tone,..o.0

I can't remember if he did that at the hospital, although we do have each other as emergency contacts.

Hospitals take soooo long! We were there 5 hours. When I broke my leg over 10 years ago, I was there for 9 hours; it was 3+ before they even mentioned to me that, yeah, you're ankle's broken.

yeah and they have a screwy sense of soverintey,..
both my mom and dad were in the hospital a lot before she passed on,..
one day my dad went in for a minor stroke and the hospital staff wouldn't let my mom in to see him,.. the story changed when me and my 300 lb "baby" brother went in on either side of her,. even security was nervous,.. but she got to see the ol'man,. too much red tape,..o.0

That's why I try to take my mom's advice when possible, since she used to be a nurse. She doesn't take shit from any doctor. Then again, she was a nurse, so she can sense when they're talking bs.

thanks. The doctor stated that this was precautionary (which I suppose means we should have said no, but I know mda--he'd take the doctor's advice), so I'm hoping it's just a long fricking day. Poor guy--he doesn't have his laptop!

Shit. Reminds me that my bf is getting older and he doesn't have insurance. I do through work so the boys do, but not him. Frickin' conservatives are going to force our hand at marriage. Nooooooooo! (But at least that's an option for us, unlike for others.)

I used to have tonsillitis EVERY winter when I was a kid. It really sucks. Best wishes to M for a speedy recovery.

If I find out anything on the domestic care stuff, I'll let you know; although it would have to be some legal documentation and I dont' think WI does that sort of thing. I've known 2 couples that got married just for the insurance. Bastards!

I'm in waiting, but at least when he left they didn't think surgery was in order. It's noon, and he left Sauk Prairie at 10, so I'm thinking.... he's sitting in some room right now. fuck.

Couldn't you just claim to be his wife? I doubt they can be bothered to check on such things. And your man's not likely to bust you for it. At least, I would hope not.

Well, when we were in the ER and he was being taken away by the doc, the receptionist asked if I was his wife, and he said "yes" b/c he didn't want to say in his infected voice, "whaul, thee's ma thig...nifigant otha," so I sat w/the lady, hiding my left hand, answering questions, until I was asked to sign something, in which I had to state my relationship to the patient. I guess S.O. was out, b/c when I told her that, and she said, "Ok, he can sign this, then," and off she went. So, legalities or lawsuits or claims or fraud or whatnot.

I guess I could have said that when I called the hospital, but by that time, my name was on their 3 times as the S.O.

Yikes, that sounds serious... No, no the marriage part. That sucks that domestic partners can't be totally involved in a serious medical snafu with their partner. I wish your guy a speedy recovery with or without the tonsillectomy...

The people in the ER were totally cool about it all and allowed me to be there but if he'd been put under the knife? That scared me. Really, tho, I suppose they would have let me be there to see him wake up. But only b/c they're compassionate people, not b/c they have any legal obligations. I can't run in somewhere and say, "I'm his wife!" in totally righteous tones.

Mda's doing well. He's gotten through a lot of crude the last day and a half and is sitting on our couch right now, reading, with a big glass of water. He's recovered really well (we still agreed he'd take tomorrow off).
