it's stupid, but I'm hurt to hear a building is destroyed

(CBS) CHICAGO A massive fire has destroyed a landmark 1890 church on the city's South Side that played a major role in the development of gospel music.

The roaring blaze, which started shortly after 3 p.m., gutted the Pilgrim Baptist Church and collapsed its roof, the flames and thick black smoke shooting so high they could be seen from blocks around.

The cause of the blaze at the church, designed by the famous architectural firm of Adler & Sullivan, was not immediately known.

I just hurt, you know? So many of Sullivan's buildings were destroyed in the late '60s, and to lose another (on top of at least 1 lost in Hurrican Katrina) just makes my muscles hurt. I'm hoping that people had kept records of the building, but it really went up in flames.

I hope it's not totally more, but it does hurt to some. And I'm 1 of them. Glad you don't think I'm a dickwad for caring about a building :)

It's not just a building. That is truly sad. :(
I remember going to look at that church when I was studying urban architecture my sophomore year of college.

I hope it was nice. I can't remember what it looked like from pictures, although I am sure that I saw photos of it in grad school--I wrote a paper about the influence of common Islamic architecture forms on Sullivan as seen in the synagogues that he & Adler designed. [The intersection of these forms is based on the "Golden Age" for Judaism in Spain for 200 years, when the Jews lived more freely under Muslims than anywhere in Europe--freaky I know. This golden age had a revival of interest throughout the 19th century.]

Have you ever been to the Sullivan bank in Owatonna, MN? Completely random, perfectly beautiful example of his work in the middle of a small town in southern Minnesota. The locals call it the "jewel box". My dad grew up there, I must have seen it a thousand times on visits to my grandmothers house before I realized how cool it was.
