New Year's Eve plans
Dec. 31st, 2005 05:30 pmOnce again, we're doing the Richland Center radio triviathon. RC is a little town about 20 miles from here (where maxchaos lives) and they ask questions over the radio, and you have about 5 mintues to call in with your answer. You have to register as a team and it's a real point of pride for some reason. Well, I know what the reason is: you get no prizes whatsoever, but doing well in it carries a certain amount of delirious pride. You're soooo excited when you get those questions, and last year we were #10! Only our second year.
For the 3rd year in a row, our team is Hogwarts Faculty Lounge.
Last year, the computer was in another room from where people where listening to the radio and eating (and you use the computer quite a bit), so I felt separated from the rest of the action. But the woman who hosted last year has got that flu and her computer didn't boot up today; plus, she's got that flu. She sounds awful, poor thing. So I volunteered our house. Once again, mda & I got things together really nicely. He made chili & mulled apple cider; I made these roll-ups with tortillas, hummus, lettuce & carrots. Messy, but they look to be good. It's at times like these that I realize what a great team we make.
People will start arriving in 15 minutes. We'll go until at least midnight.
Then tomorrow we go to the fabulous wi_c & jujupees' house!! Where I'll get to see jaaladay & her family!! I love it.
Good new year's to you all, and I hope you have a good night and stay safe. I've got to grate cheese.
Thanks to all you LJers for reading my posts and always being a damned fine group of people.

Date: 2006-01-01 03:45 am (UTC)Either that, or threaten to call Homeland Security on your ass.
Right now we're listening to "Ice, Ice, Baby," since they're playing "Under Pressure."
We can celebrate our positions tomorrow at wi_c & jujupees' house.

Date: 2006-01-01 04:42 am (UTC)My rule is "never listen to my first guess" if I'm the only one to think it--guaranteed to tank.
Wait, though! That means you might be down on our level.
Now, let's kill "Opposable Thumbs." Those people need to go down.
damn. you're still ahead of us.

Date: 2006-01-01 06:50 am (UTC)we screwed up on bible verses, even though we have 2 experts, but you never know w/those different versions. And we're almost always screwed on sports questions.
then there was one question about the guy who walked the perimeter of wisconsin. That brought some reeeeeaaaaaaalllllyyyyy weird stuff up on google. Actually, it was one of the funniest moments of the night.

Date: 2006-01-13 03:53 am (UTC)And both of us!
We got back the final, amended report from the WRCO team, and they made some corrections. Both your team and ours are in the same position, which is...
#8!!
This is because we answered the National Weather Service guy voice as "Igor". There was enough contention to change the score (not from us, b/c 1 of our friends knows the people who organize this and has vowed never to complain).
We are #8!!

Date: 2006-01-01 06:49 am (UTC)Our little place worked really well. 2 computers hooked up to high speed internet, and plenty of openness between those working on computers, books, and the phone and those just hanging out. So we might be the logical people to host next year.

Date: 2006-01-01 06:58 am (UTC)We finished 13th. We were trailing further for awhile, but we caught up. We missed one of the questions in the last hour, which is a speed round, but we never get all those questions anyway.
We didn't do as well as last year, but still decent I think.
It was a good night overall. People had everything they needed to eat and drink, we got to communicate while the game was going on, and everyone left sober.
Happy New Year.

Date: 2006-01-01 07:51 am (UTC)We made #10 last year, but we lost our sports lackey. Damn woman was supposed to give us the contact info for the sports desk at the Cap Times. That woman is seriously in need of some talking to.
I'll talk to my teammates, but we're so devoted to our name. The same core 5 have been playing for 4 years (the first year we just played by the radio). The first year of competition, we got our sports lackey & her partner (so, 7). This year, the 1 woman was sick, the sports lackey & partner were gone, but we had 2 more join (6 in all).

Date: 2006-01-01 05:01 pm (UTC)I try not to wish for happy new years (because I think it sets up a false expectation) but I always, sincerely appreciate the sentiment.
