I got an e-mail from Salon.com begging for my renewal. They had sent me a 1-day offer a few weeks ago in which they were willing to give me 15 months for a 12 month price. I didn't take them up on it (didn't realize it was a 1-day offer). So, I got another begging e-mail today--18 months for the 12 month price. SCORE. Ok, I like Salon, and I feel like supporting them. I do feel like they've gone down in quality since I first "discovered" them in 2001, after a recommendation from a Time magazine pub. entitled, On,1 and by that time, Salon had been an on-line publication since, like, 1996. The primordial age of the internet. But they still have some pretty good stuff and it's good reading material in the morning over my 2 cups of coffee.

But I'll take any bargain I can get. Woo-woo!

1 I received some questionnaire from Time magazine asking me why I didn't read them anymore. First of all, they're not what they used to be either. Some people accuse them of losing their neutrality, but what did it for me was the increased flashiness and flimsiness of the overall publication. And their proponderance for front page stories 3 times a year on the nature of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, the Bible, the Gospels, the Apostles. Or yoga, meditation, and other "alterna-medicines" with some leotarded babe on the cover. Oh, and the increasing space devoted to entertainment news. Hey, don't get me wrong, I always read the entertainment news/book reviews first, but then I would work through the rest of the magazine because I knew it was good for me.

Anyway, Time magazine's wondering, "What happened? Can you tell us?" The truth is that before my last subscription to Time ran out, I was hungering for something else. I even thought about something hefty and scary, like the Atlantic Monthly. I couldn't even comprehend The New Yorker (which scares me, honestly, because they have really weighty stories, "serious" fiction, stories about NYC that I don't give a damn about, and, frankly, the fonts that they use creep me out).

But then that Time magazine off-shoot (sent to my house as part of the subscription package) alerted me to this website called Salon. Their information gave me the information to leave them once and for all. Oh, the Horror!
