My oldest sister was born in 1965. I was born in 1968. But E was into Kansas, Styx, Led Zeppelin, and Janis Joplin (it was the 70s).

J, E's partner, was also born in 1968, about a month and a half after me. She knows all the 80s alterna-stuff: Smiths, the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen... and They Might Be Giants (The list goes on and on). Last night, when E and I were talking about the CD from TMBG that I bought for my niece, E said, "Yeah, it's some band that you guys know." I replied, "Build a little birdhouse in your soul."* E said, "What?" "Build a little birdhouse in your soul." E repeated this to J. "Oh, yeah," J replied.

"Weird." E said (or some such).

How could she have no idea about this when she's only 3 years older than me, and has been w/someone for 8.5 years?

makes me laugh.

*Or maybe this does: I always remember it as "build a little birdhouse in your soul," when according to all the places I've gone looking for lyrics, it's actually, "MAKE a little birdhouse in your soul." Those people just have to be wrong.

I know, I know. But I've been singing "build a little birdhouse" for like a decade.

[not literally.]

I was going to say. I've had songs stuck in my head before, but that's ridiculous.

The longest lately, was a 4-note song a friend made up to his new baby that went that went through my head for about 3.5 hours. Almost drove me insane.

I can't explain the weird revelation I had when I first understood what that song was actually about. Took me about 2 years to understand it. It made no sense before that.

Doesn't anyone want to talk about what a dork my sister is?

No?

sigh.

I still don't know what it's about. But it's catchy.

Your sister is a total dork.

Meh. A whole tonne of people my age don't know the stuff I was listening to. The Detroit radio market was primarily rock & R&B

The town I grew up in was VERY much into hair metal. All you ever saw were Iron Maiden & Led Zepplin shirts. I rememberone summer, having to hear Judas Priest's "Turbo Lover" over and over.

They didn't have cable out in the county, so a lot of the MuchMusic stuff didn't penetrate.

But people who live together should share tastes. Mind you, my ex was a teen in the 70's, so it's all Elton John and crap. Then she was getting into the stuff the kids listen to. I don't know if that's 2nd childhood, or trying to be a cool parent. Regarless, *I* knew her tastes, and the kids tastes, and they didn't give a shit about mine...

So, your sister sucks.

My friend DDD and I still talk about the "alterna" radio station that came out of Philly for 6 months when we were in high school. Other than that, it was hair bands all the way.

E and I were close in age, but miles apart in interests. The last time we lived together, I was 15 and hadn't discovered any of my own music except for the Police and the Who.

your ex sucks.

Your sister and George W. Bush should trade iPods.

I was born in 1967, and I know all the sixties and seventies rock. It's what I was listening to in the eighties. I'm also familiar with the 90's alternative stuff. Since I'm into music so much, I've picked up on a lot of the eighties stuff.

Yeah, it appears that E stopped listening to "new" music around the time she hit 15. I don't know why.

I stopped listening to new music when I started listening to music. When I discovered rock music, I only liked the old stuff. New stuff just didn't cut it, for the most part. It was many years before enough good stuff came out for me to acknowledge that it was possible to make good new music.

I am nostalgic for some good 80s music from time to time. Somewhere in the last 5-6 years, I stopped listening to new music. I wait for my friends to introduce it to me. Fortunately, they occasionally drop off unwarrented CDs. I'm grateful.
