we were froxen in our house this morning, at least through the front door. We've got massive dripping on this side of the house. mda thinks that this side, which is about 15-20 years old (as opposed to the rest of the house, which is about 70) wasn't insulated enough. This is melting the snow on the roof. I think he's right, and I don't know why it didn't occur to us before. It must have been 10 degrees outside last night, and the icicles were dripping. Hence the fact that, while we could get in and outside of our door last night, we could not use the same door this morning because the ice had piled up to the point where it served as a door block.

another design flaw,.. doors under a drip edge should have some protection, at least an awning,..o.0

We've talked about building something (in the magical world in which we would have the money for such a thing). Little porches definitely make more sense when you're coming in from snow to the front door.

i have one unprotected door left on the house, it swings in, so doesn't get blocked, but i have plans for a cover(probably an arch of some kind)just to keep the ice off the landing,..someday,.;)

attic insulation would help with that problem and heating/cooling bills.
I gave in and closed the damper on the fireplace just after christmas
when I thought I might be saving the tree for amy's homecoming -
I knew I wouldn't be burning the paper junk that was in there.
then I discovered a huge cold air draft from the exhaust fan over the stove.
don't think I can do anything about that one.

Thanks for the advice. We have a little attic space that we piled more insulation on before we bought the house (we were renting it from the owner at the time). Underneath the attic, the roof angles down until it meets the area of our 2nd floor. That's insulated, but it's very thin insulation. That could be part of the problem. I just hope we last through the winter ok until we can attend to this as we need to :)

Hey, what's one of the things that almost of all of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings are known for? Leaking.

Or as I like to say, "There are a lot of myths about Frank Lloyd Wright. The one about the leaky roofs is not one of them." :)
