I love his perspective. We take a lot for granted. Back in 1876, you used to have to transfer yourself and luggage 17 times on the train journey from NYC to Chicago (Gore Vidal, 1876).

I still feel a little weird when flying anywhere, knowing how long it used to take.

And of course (ever since I read those old newspapers) I'm glad I don't just drop dead while walking down the street.

...or losing a limb because there were no antibiotics. I often think how easy it would be to sink into another "dark age," where air travel and most lightning speed forms of communication could go away.
