On this 100-year anniversary, I've gathered photographs of the Great War from dozens of collections, some digitized for the first time, to try to tell the story of the conflict, those caught up in it, and how much it affected the world.Introduction: http://www.theatlantic.com/static/infocus/wwi/introduction/

.....and to think, only 25 years later, the same countries were trying to kill off the babies born during and just after that conflict, in a fresh round of slaughter and destruction....
(so if you were born in 1870....and had your first child in 1890, second in 1894, and third in 1896 (a reasonable spread)....there is a good chance all of them could have fought...perhaps one or two died....and the friends you knew, their children would have also been fighting, and some of the men may also have been fighting....and if your children survived....and if you lived to the grand old age of 70.....you could have seen your own grandchildren going off to war...perhaps leaving young families, babies, of their own behind....watching the generations being randomly pruned by fate, fortune and pure luck...both good and bad...)
