I had my flute lesson w/the new guy yesterday. I played Syrinx for him by Debussy, and not too shabbily. We talked about my goals, which are lofty. To continue working on the things I know, like embouchure, the top register on the flute, embouchure jumps (high to low notes), all that technical stuff. But I'd also like to explore the concepts behind improvisation, and *possibly* (very big on the possibly) playing with the *idea* of *maybe* playing w/others one day [yeah, I am a go-go kind of girl].

He had some good advice for my embouchure, after running around underneath me while I played a low B (Trevor Wye, this flute guy, believed that the low B was one of the easiest notes to play on the flute). It's hard to keep playing when someone's running underneath you to get a look at your embouchure, b/c you want to laugh, which pretty much ruins what you're trying to do. Of course, I'm on my 3rd cup of coffee right now, so it'll be a few hours before I delve into any embouchure work. I'm seeing him for a real lesson on Tuesday. We'll check this out & see how it goes. His different approach sounds promising, but I'll see what I get out of him.

He put forth the idea that I try playing 10 minutes a day, if I'm not going to be practicing every day. He said, "Maybe in the morning after you're done breakfast." And I immediately thought 2 things. 1 is, my mouth isn't supple enough and my hands are fluid enough at that time of the morning; but more importantly, I thought, "I can't do it in the morning. That's when I'm reading livejournal!"

me, too. What's interesting too is that this is close by, so I won't be playing in a vaccuum. The lessons are actually taking place at the house of a woman I work with.
