1. What was the first concert you ever attended? How old were you? Where was it?

The Police, 1981? It was the summer before Ghost in the Machine came out. I was 13. It was a hell of a lot of fun. My middle sister Moe drove me there.

2. What was the most recent concert you attended? Where and when?

I saw the local band Boxelder at the Hillside theater on the Tal. estate about 2 weeks ago. Aside from local bands, performers, the last bigtime concert I saw was Janet Jackson in Milwaukee, shit, October 2001!

3. Have you ever seen your favorite artist/band in concert? Did the show live up to your expectations or were you disappointed?

The Police, and Janet Jackson. I'm just a cauldron of surprises, aren't I? The Police were always good. Janet I don't like so much in concert. She goes through, like, 9 costume changes. Every time you're getting to the point where you're in concert fever mode, she walks off stage and is gone for, like, 2 minutes. Totally fucks up the flow of the show. I have thought that I would drive 10 hours & pay $200 to see her play a concert w/just a band--no choreography, no costume changes.

4. Ever been to a concert where you were pleasantly surprised at the performance? Ever been to a concert where you were totally disappointed? Name 'em!

The best surprise I think I ever got was seeing the band In a Big Country in like 1985-6. They had that 1 hit of the same name. Their concert totally rocked. Last year, mda & I were sitting around a campfire & we met Dan (of Boxelder). He started playing "Jane's Says" by Jane's Addiction. It was such a refreshing thing to hear our music played on acoustic guitar around a fire. He and 2 of the bandmates played for about 1 1/2 hours.

I've seen Dylan twice--he's just as incomprehensible as people like to imitate him as. Big ol' yawn.

Also in '85-86, we went to see the Cult. They were headlining. They played 3 songs, flipped us off and disappeared.

5. Name five bands that would headline your own personal festival. (Along the lines of Oz Fest or Lollapalooza)

Barenaked Ladies
REM
Janet Jackson (unplugged ONLY)
Led Zeppelin
The Grateful Dead

I agree that frequent pauses for costume changes really ruin a show. It gets you completely out of the flow of things.

The Police though...I would have LOVED to see them.

*sigh*

Janet doesn't seem to realize what the costume changes do to us in the "Not $110 ticket price range" seats.

I saw the Police 5 times. You know, typical high school obsession phase. I knew a woman in college who saw them at CBGBs on their first US concert tour (when they had a 45 minute set). That would be so wild. Like I said, they were good. Sting of course nows how to play a crowd.
