My flute teacher had to cancel this eve. She’s got the flu. Actually, she’s dropping all of her students, and this next lesson will be our last. She’s gotten a job at a school & that’s going to take up all of her time. I’m not disappointed in this, as I’ve been thinking about moving on and getting a new teacher (hopefully not one an hour & 15 min away). It’s been a good run, overall, ‘cept for last year when she kept canceling on me. “I’ve learned a lot,” as mda says (usually about things that are painful experiences).

Speaking of, I’m eating his stir-fry from last night for lunch. I should e-mail him to tell him about the cancelled lesson so he doesn’t have a naked freak party w/little umbrella drinks going on at the house when I get home.

Oh, but more on flute-—I may have a teacher. He’s the bf of a co-worker, almost got a masters in clarinet, but has been playing that & flute for awhile, wants to teach, and wants to concentrate on flute. He lives in a town 15 min away. He’s off right now, but called to say we’d set an appt. when he got back from this commitment. I hope he doesn’t freak when he finds out I smoke. Tammy never said anything, but I can’t imagine she doesn’t know.

Oh, I got a call from a Wisconsin radio journalist who’s going w/a bunch of other journalists to Fallingwater in October. They’re interested in having “FLLW experts” talk to them on the bus, I think. He wanted to know if I could give him names & contact info. I said, “sure, can I come, too?” So I gave him my info. This was Tuesday. Sunday I gave a hse tour, and someone donated $250 afterward. Not a bad percentage of donations per tours (I’ve done 3? this summer). Certainly made the fundraiser perk up. She sees me in research/fulminating/geek mode all the time and doesn’t realize that I really can rock.

It’s a gorgeous day, like a nice day in September. I should go outside to eat.

He should have the naked freak parties with umbrella drinks with you, not without you. That darn MDA!

you're always the best advocate for things like that. I'm trying to figure out if he'll roll his eyes, purse his lips, or say he'll think about it.

What kind of fool would say no to a naked freak party with umbrella drinks? It's not like you'd have to invite other people. Could be a private party.

He gets performance anxiety. It's not that he'd be running around naked in front of others (unless it's naked t-ai chi), but then everyone would think we had a naked freak party... and he'd feel like he'd have to supply the details.

it's all very complicated. I did just mention it to him in an e-mail, so I'll see what response I get.

Good luck with your flute teacher. :) My sister has had musical instrument lessons for years, and so I know how hard it is to find good teachers. And how once you lose or outgrow one, it's sometimes a daunting task to find a replacement.

I actually stopped taking guitar lessons last summer because my teacher kept canceling on me. Then I started school again, and I didn't have the time. What was really sad was that I had really liked the teacher I had when I was in New Hampshire. We really connected despite the fact that I have genuine problems with the guitar, and sometimes didn't have time to practice as much as I should. (My hands and fingers aren't big enough and it takes me forever to learn anything new.)

It was a sad day when I had to say goodbye to Gary. Sigh... Why does he have to live in New Hampshire! ;-)

I've been trying to get myself back into the groove so that I can play and sing along with my sister at Christmas. We'll see if I succeed!

Our musical abilities sound about the same! Sometimes I wonder (a) how teachers can stand it and (b) how much parents must love their kids to force them to practice. I'd go nuts if I were a parent and had to listne to someone of my talent practicing!

It was pretty hard when Tammy kept cancelling last summer. She was stretched way too thin. And the thing is, there were about 4 times when I drove all the way out to her house, and she hadn't gotten in touch with me. Basically, this meant 2 1/2 hours of my night were gone. She'd always give me a free lesson the next time, but it didn't make a difference.

I hope you have luck. I was thinking there would be peopel at the Berklee school who would teach, but that's a huge commute by the T, isn't it? Of course, Harvard should have a couple of students around, don't you think?

It's so much easier for me to sing. And I get frustrated sometimes because I know how a song should go, but I haven't passed through that learning threshold that allows me to sightread with any kind of ease. (Changing chords quickly is my big bugaboo right now...)

There are a ton of places in Boston where I could go for lessons. Unfortunately, I live about 50 miles south of Boston and would have to commute in. (Which is something that I do all the time, but this time I would have to do it with a guitar.) I could also find a good teacher in the Providence area near where I work. The problem, as we move into the school year, is going to be time, unfortunately.

I have to look at my schedule and see what fits. :) It's so sad, but it looks like I'm booked to the max already.

Oh, you've told me where you live 2x now, and I keep forgetting. I keep thinking you live in Allston or Somerville (hmmm--2 places I lived, no wonder).

Yeah, getting lessons in on your schedule sounds hard, if not impossible. Gladys knows I couldn't have done any purely creative outlet while I was in school. That's what hanging out w/your fellow grad students at the bar on Friday nights is for, right?

Oh dear God, yes!

You know, some of those texts that I have to read actually go better with a little hard cider. ;-) :)
