The man who taught painting on PBS.
People look at me like I'm a little strange, when I go around talking to squirrels and rabbits and stuff. That's ok. Thaaaat's just ok.

I have a Bob Ross t-shirt.

This is funny:
When I was teaching my son Steve to paint, I used to tell him, just pretend he was a whisper, and he floated right across the mountain, that easy, gentle, make love to it, caress it.

You are way ahead on style than I've ever thought to be.

I'm trying to figure out how he fits in to latter 20th C discourse. And why there's been this interest in him after he was more-or-less buried as a figure for 15 years.

Well, it's kinda like any pop culture. People see it and like it. But it doesn't become a thing until people discover that other people like it. Then they're like OMG, you too!" But their enthusiasm builds on each other's. And of course - the internet.

Not only that, but I think a certain amount of time had to pass before he went from a painter on public television, to... remember that guy? Pure nostalgia.

Nostalgia - I bet that's true. And the knowledge that "you like that too!" I had never thought much about him until a friend in college told me how funny she thought he was.

My sister and I used to see him occasionally, when we were teenagers. And after a while we would laugh about him. She and I never quite outgrew that, so we never had to "come back" with the nostalgia. She's the one who got me the t-shirt, of course.
