In my first or second year in grad school, we had a Halloween party where we came dressed as works of art. Unfortunately, while I remember being impressed by the pieces, I only remember what I came as - Marcel Duchamp's L.H.O.O.Q..

You just reminded me! That was one of the Halloween costumes at that Art History party I went to!!

So, the answer is: most definitely.

Yeah!

Better than going as Manfredi's "Cupid Chastised"...

"Cupid Chastise" - I hadn't seen that before - interesting. Thanks. But definitely not something for a part - for one thing, it would be kind of cold to try to accomplish that on an October evening.

It's the most memorable thing at the Art Institute. Who cares about some dotty painting? Hahaha!

That never fails to bring out the dirty old French man in me. Marcel D had a great sense of humor and knew how to push the buttons of polite society.

He liked playing with gender roles, certainly.

I always forget: who did the bronze piece that was molded clay that a woman had, um, inserted up into her private parts? Then they took the form & cast it in bronze? I don't think it was Duchamp or Ernst. Damn - my memory has failed me and I can't remember who did it! argh.

This link doesn't solve the puzzle, but it's interesting speculation on women who may have been Duchamps' collaborateurs:
