Once again I went to the LitFest board meeting feeling as if I were a kid who forgot her homework. I never do enough for the board, it just comes up every once in awhile. Actually, I said I would do 2 things, and having an assignment is good. I have to learn to ask what these assignments entail, though. I've thought about quitting the board, but I want to find out if my friend MD will be on the board next year (she's taken a year off due to her sabbatical). That would make it fun; other than that, I don't like this feeling.
Oh, and here's what I won't confess to them: not only have I never gone to the LitFest, I haven't read the books that are being feature this year. I should probably get on that at sometime, don't you think?
But, really, one of the highlights of going to board meetings is seeing Bruce, the ego-maniac who is, I don't know, either completely infuriating or completely amusing to me. He cannot say anything in which he doesn't portray himself as this popular, artistic guy.
"Oh, I'm so sorry I haven't been here for the last few meetings." [one.two.three.] "I've been working on this plaaaay and I haven't had any time."
"Have you ever been to XX-cafe in Madison?" "No." "I have a friend who plays there sometimes." [one.two.three.] "And they've asked me to do some of my murder mysteries there."
"I've been corresponding back and forth with Chuck about his party." [Chuck knows about my feelings towards Bruce. WI-C says that Chuck takes himself too seriously, but he and his partner are scarily artsy, and make me feel artsy inadequate. I thought getting an MA in Art History was supposed to preclude any feelings of that sort for the rest of my life. That IS why I did it, isn't it? Anyway, Chuck has won some grants, and publishes a decent on-line magazine.]
Regarding a DORKY local radio program called Higher Ground with Jonathon Overby, Bruce says he thinks we should get on Higher Ground to publicize the LitFest. "I'm praactically a member of the family," he says, in describing his relationship with that program. Really, it's totally dorky. You're not saying much, Bruce.
So you see my issue here. These are only a small example of the things that came out of his mouth last night, and yet I've remembered them and written them down. It occurred to me last night that, given the fact that he's Welsh, maybe this is how some people saw FLLW. Oh, and there's another Welsh guy on the board, who is friends w/Bruce; both he & Bruce are punsters to an unbelieveable degree.
