From the wires, and my Bush bash (and, no, that has nothing to do with a box of dildoes).
With a huge $10.5 million downpayment, President Bush's re-election committee rolled out its first campaign commercials on Wednesday, using images of the destroyed World Trade Center to claim ‘‘steady leadership in times of change."
‘‘What sees us through tough times? Freedom, faith, families, and sacrifice," says one commercial, as clips roll of the Sept. 11, 2001, wreckage, a flag being raised, children saying the Pledge of Allegiance, parishioners at a church, parents with a new baby and firefighters appear.
The ads portray the Republican incumbent as a steward who has led the country through three years of economic woes and terrorism fears and seek to make the case that Bush has emerged as a leader amid foreign and domestic challenges.
Let's review what this leader was doing when the planes hit the buildings, and how he reacted that day. He was at an elementary school. There had been 2 confirmed terrorist hits by the time he was ushered onto Air Force One, where he spent the day being flown around, or at air force bases. I actually don't have a problem w/the Air Force One thing. He's the frickin' president of the US. They're not going to take him in harm's way. But what gets me is what he was doing on that plane. Being totally freaked out, unprepared, and calling Dick Cheney every once in awhile b/c he was scared shitless (I saw this in a documentary on PBS either 9/10 or 9/11, 2003). Yes, we all were, but he's the frickin' president of the US. I think that, right there, is the test of the man. He didn't have his handlers and advisors with him, and he was totally dumbfounded as to what to do. No, he wouldn't know off the top of his head which codes to call out, but he could have risen to the challenge a little earlier. I mean, just hours that's all.
As I sat in my living room, drunk, on the night of 9/11, I remember thinking as the president addressed the nation, "Please don't fuck up. Please don't fuck up. You've got the whole world watching you. Just read the words correctly on the teleprompter." And in the back of my mind, I thought, "ooh. That's not a good sign."
So, yeah, we expect 9-11 to be brought up, but let's remember when the shit went down, how this "leader" initially responded.
