likethebeer: (Old time radio)
Lux Radio Theater: "Shane" 02/22/55
Shane is an old gunslinger who has been battling the entire show about wanting to go on a shooting spree. Kind of makes me feel bad for all those folks in the old West, where you'd walk into the saloon to get some sody-pop and all those folks'd laugh at you. Or, you know, it could be fiction.

Anyway, Joey (the kid) is annoying, constantly with the rifle yelling, "Bang! Bang! Bang!" No plastic guns, of course - he is occasionally seen running around with a real rifle.... Makes me think the kid's going to get shot at some point.

Well, Joe, the owner of the ranch where Shane is working, wants to go off and kill some people; Shane has to fight him off. This real need that Joe has to go out & fight is really tied to how Joe feels about himself as a man. 'Nother thing that reminds me of how gender stereotypes used to be so strong. Every man I would know would be like, "Oh, Shane - you want to go fight that guy? Ok - sounds like a good idea to me. Tell me if you need anything, but thanks for taking this over."

Aw - Shane kills the person he should & takes off because he realizes that he can't escape who he is. Oh, and fortunately the kid wasn't shot.
Great Gildersleeve: "The Diet" 01/04/42
Oh, poor Gildy is trying to lose 10 lbs. in a week, without smoking cigars (or eating 3 or 4 sausages & pancakes). Sounds like they didn't know much about dieting at that time - it seems to entail not eating at all.

Well, Gildy survived & lost 13 lbs.
Suspense: "Sorry, Wrong Number" 09/06/45
Starring Agnes Moorehead.

Crap, this story is creepy & scary. Enjoy!

Or more like: incredibly intense. She does a lot of screaming, which is making me freaked out.... Her freaking out also reminds me of what's sometimes in my head when nothing goes well at all. And I really don't like thinking I sound like Agnes Moorehead freaking out, even only in my head.
Nero Wolfe: "Case of the Midnight Ride" 03/09/51
Confusing Nero Wolfe - almost like some of those crazy mystery programs, where so much happens that you can't track of it all: Archie Goodwin (Wolfe's assistant) gets a call from a woman asking for help, who gets cut off; then a doctor shows up who was also contacted by the same woman (who they went to high school with). Then Archie and this doctor get taken out in a car and the driver gets shot, they get shot at, but the shooter hasn't meant to hit them. Then they listen to a recording that the driver made, and find this woman (by counting clicks on the phone dial on the recording in order to figure out the number). They go to her house, she comes to the door, a man comes along who says he's her doctor (he's not), he says the aunt died that day (she didn't, she's sedated), then the police officer (who's followed them up there) comes in to fix everything. It turns out that the older woman was rich & they were trying to get her money.

whew.
Strange Dr. Weird: Survival of the Fittest" 01/23/45
Remember to always wear an Adam hat - from Adam hat stores and authorized dealers.

Oh, boy: these guys are walking 10 miles in the snow for a gold field, and they haven't eaten in 4 days. Sounds like the guys who haven't eaten are going to die. Well, the guy who stole the food (Mike) is going off to take more food. Boy, Mike is mean. That other guy (Victor) is practically crying. I think Mike has gone snowblind.

So, one guy is practically starving, and the other guy is practically blind. And somehow I don't think Mike is going to help Victor once Victor goes over to get the food.

Gold makes people crazy, doesn't it.

Good thing, Mike fell into a crevasse, Victor gets to the food to survive, and is rescued a few days later (and doesn't get the gold - I think he should try finding it in the summer next time).

Dr. Weird says (to the unnamed listener), "So, just remember, if you're ever tempted to betray your friends, just remember to... oh? You have to go?" But - wait! What, Dr. Weird! What about betraying our friends? What should we do? Not do it? Not leave any witnesses? What?! Oh, I don't know!

I kept expecting to see a color photo of Marcel Duchamp or Alberto Giacometti walking around.
