Salon.com keeps going down in quality, and I'm searching for things online things to read every morning. I've checked out The Economist but haven't been hooked. I look at Huffington Post & Dailykos (fun, but more entrenched in politics than what I want), Slate (um, ok, still trying to figure out if I want to read it full time), and I gave up on CNN & the BBC, b/c it's too depressing. I often read many of the articles in aldaily.com, but those are only 3 articles a day. When I see a magazine from there that looks interesting, I save it and look around, but nothing has really captured me so far. I've even looked for David Talbot, who started Salon.com and was its editor for many years, but he's not back into this line of work at the moment, so I've got no luck there.
Today, at Salon, they unveiled "Open Salon!", which is a blog, I guess. I'll look at it, although I don't like the design (it's too bright and loud) and, again, really this "Open Salon!" is not what that site used to be. What it used to be was a site of great writing, in both opinion and professional investigative reporting. It also had opposing viewpoints, which I appreciated. I would learn a lot, and find things so amusing that I had to read them out loud to mda.
Nowadays, I go to Salon, glance at the articles that have been pushed forward, read book reviews or interviews if they seem interesting, but also spend a lot of time avoiding the sports section, the "personal advice column", the sex stuff, the gender-issues stuff, and any letters, because they just get stupid. I just don't enjoy it as much as I used to. So I've been looking for more than a year for something that I really enjoy reading.
My subscription will be ending at the end of this year and I keep renewing Salon because I don't know anywhere else to go, but nothing has captured me like Salon.com did 7 years ago. So I am asking once more: do you have any suggestions? I'd appreciate it, thanks.
