Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi
May. 17th, 2008 03:52 pmThey've announced they're getting married, and I keep looking at the news reports at de Rossi, who is just so pretty, and DeGeneres, trying to understand it. Yes, I know - people fall in love for all sorts of reasons, but I still look at this beautiful woman and DeGeneres, who, while not really ugly, is not stunning. I just have to keep reminding myself about Anne Bancroft & Mel Brooks.
Brush with stardom: their son married my freshman college roommate. I found this out when I decided to go looking for her on Google years ago, and this article came up. And there was Michelle! "Oh my god, she's at a party with Mel Brooks! And Anne Bancroft!" And then I read the caption noting that Michelle was their son's fiance. Anyway, it was freaky for me. And, when I've had moments of remembering this, I always think, "Your mother-in-law was Mrs. Robinson!" Which, I am sure that she's heard before.
Oh, and Maximillian is quite attractive, from the photos I've seen.
Marriage and familyEverything that Bancroft always said about Brooks was that it was just... she met him & that was it. This short, kind of dumpy Jewish guy. Apparently, it was his sense of humor that captured her.
From July 1, 1953, to February 13, 1957, [Bancroft] was married to Martin May. The marriage produced no children.
In 1961, Bancroft met Mel Brooks in a rehearsal for the Perry Como variety show. Brooks bribed a studio employee to find out where she was having dinner so he could meet her again. Once Bancroft met Brooks, she went to her therapist and told him they had to conclude the therapy as fast as possible because she had met the man she was going to marry.
They married on August 5, 1964, in New York City Hall and were together until her death. They had one son, Maximillian, in 1972.
