Favorite movies. Aside from Grosse Pointe Blank and Mel Brooks' The Producers, Young Frankenstein & Blazing Saddles. Oh, and my friend M knows this, but given what I've revealed of my clandestine relationships w/famous people: my freshman college roommate, a girl I really liked, is engaged (married now, I suppose). I googled her and she came up on a society page. The page came up and there she is at a party w/some guy and... Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft. I was really blown away. But wait, there's more: the guy is her fiance. And the guy is the son of... Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft. Holy shit.
Ok, so here are my favorite movies (I'm sure I'll think of more, but): The Killing Fields (I always cry twice: in the middle, and at the end). The Mummy w/Brendan Frasier (my celebrity crush). It is a smart, funny, well-crafted movie, and I don't care what anyone says. The Matrix. Heroic Trio.--got me on my love of "chop-socky" movies (that's a nod to Cryptonomicon), and is still one of the freakiest things out there. Also made me look at Crouching Tiger and go "flying people? Fighting in a bamboo forest--seen it, know it!" A Room with a View. An old favorite, I used to watch it when I had a couple of hours to spare. As well as sex, lies, and videotape. That has the elements of a good short story, according to my old writing teacher: you introduce your characters and either someone new comes in (Graham) or something happens, and they all are changed as a result. Black Mask (although I don't have it on video or anything else). Jet Li as his bad-assiest, sexiest self. A whole slew of Fred Astaire movies, if I could afford them. It's a Wonderful Life. For itself, and that it's a major event with our friends N&M. [edit]--Jaws. The last time I saw that movie, I was transported. I couldn't believe how suspenseful and good it is after all this time.
Guilty Pleasures: Con Air. That's right: Con Air. Funny, silly, and it has John Cusack. Singles. Makes me still love Kira Sedgwick & Campbell Scott. Who wouldn't love a story about a sweet guy who really loves the girl? Poison Ivy. Drew Barrymore & Sara Gilbert, w/Cheryl Ladd's ashes driven around w/the top down. BTW, I saw this w/an ex-boyfriend w/ a foot fetish, and only then did I realize that the director either has a major foot fetish, or made for people w/that fetish. Love Potion #9. The guiltiest pleasure up here. I would never watch this with anyone else (well, maybe Marianne). Also why I have a crush on Tate Donovan (not as big as Brendan Frasier). It's a fantasy come true--geeky people get a potion that makes people instantly fall in love w/them. But of course, they really love each other. Yes, there's underlying homophobia, but I can cope. There are probably a few others I wouldn't even put up here.
