Nice take down of a man named David Gilmour - who is "a novelist and a broadcaster; he teaches a few classes at Victoria College; and he makes extremely blinkered statements about literature" - and a nice discussion of literature professors, and what they try to do.

Women weren’t allowed to write, go to school or have experiences. Thus, we have accumulated fewer great female writers by this at this point in history. Novel writing takes freedom and women didn’t have it. Their absence on “a lists of greats” is a product of gender and class oppression. As far as I’m concerned, women have only been writing novels since 1960. It’s going to take time to catch up to the boys.

We may complain about what this guy is saying but we share his bias. I have seen your bookshelf and it is over 90% male. As is mine.

Oh, I didn't look at what he was saying and yelled, "There are no women!" Just, "look at the larger picture of literature." I thought that's what the writer of the piece was saying, too.

I should have specified. I’m referring more to Gilmour’s comment that he didn’t like women writers. I’m avoiding links today since this computer seems to keep seizing up. So, I didn’t read this specific article.
